Burning smell from a plug socket in Walsall? What to do straight away to stay safe, what causes it, and why it needs an electrician the same day.
A burning smell from a socket or plug is the one electrical problem not to wait on. It usually means a connection has worked loose and is overheating, or a plug or adaptor is overloaded and starting to melt. Plastic that is heating up gives off a sharp, fishy or acrid smell well before anything catches fire, which is your warning to act.
Here is what to do. If there is smoke or you can see flames, get everyone out and ring 999. If there is just the smell, and it is safe to reach your fuse board, switch off the circuit that socket is on, or the main switch if you are not sure which one. Do not pull the plug out with your bare hand if it looks scorched or feels hot. Then call us.
Across Walsall the usual causes are old sockets with loose terminals, heaters and tumble dryers plugged into extension leads, and cheap multi-way adaptors stacked on top of each other. The fix is often a new socket and a sound connection, but the cable behind it needs checking too, because heat can damage it out of sight.
01Smoke or flames: get out | Leave the house, close the door behind you if you can, and ring 999. Do not go back in for anything. |
|---|---|
02Smell only: switch it off | At the fuse board, turn off the circuit for that socket, or the main switch. Then leave the socket alone. |
03Do not touch a hot plug | If the plug or socket looks brown, melted or blackened, do not grab it. Wait until the power is off and it has cooled. |
04Check for overloading | Heaters, kettles, dryers and washing machines draw a lot of power. They should go straight into a wall socket, never into an adaptor or extension lead. |
05Keep the evidence | A photo of the scorched socket or plug helps us see what happened before we arrive. |

Yes, it can, which is why it needs dealing with the same day. Switch it off and keep everyone away from it until it has been checked.
Not necessarily. The connection that overheated is still loose, and it will heat up again the next time something is plugged in. Keep it switched off until we have looked.
Often, yes. Some plastics used in sockets and plugs give off a fishy smell when they overheat. Treat it the same as a burning smell.
Not always. We start with the socket and the cable behind it. If we find signs of a wider problem, we will explain it plainly and leave the choice with you.
